I'd like to take a moment to discuss this. First off, I would've thought that a well-informed SEO writer such as Barry Schwartz would know better than to post someone's wild claim without actual proof, results or where they got their information from. BUT I'm going to give Barry the benefit of the doubt and assume that he considered this a brilliant piece of link bait which would lead to a raging discussion on his blog --- guess what, it has!

I decided to test this de-indexation theory on the Info Vilesilencer Top 100 Free Directory List.

What I found was that every single directory on the list IS indexed. That's 100% of 100 directories.

There were a decent handful, say 12-15 directories, whose indexation was low (in the 300-1000 pages indexed range). However, I have seen indexation numbers fluctuate pretty wildly and let's face it. The directories are still indexed.

The directories being discussed at SERoundtable were completely de-indexed and the tester has put forward the wild claim that 50% are de-indexed based on his findings.

He's yelling "fire" because he's seen smoke, and others are reacting and doing the same, but no one's bothered to check the source of the smoke. To me it's little more than a brushfire and people are losing the plot over something that is a non-issue.

Why is Google de-indexing the directories that this person is testing? The answer is simple. Whatever directory list he has compiled or is using is obviously filled with low-quality directories. Call them what you want: QBC's (quick buck crew), fly-by nighters, domain squatters, PR sellers, link farms, free for alls.

You would expect Google to discount/devalue/deindex directories that fall into that low-value, here-today gone-tomorrow category. The same as they would with any other site that is low quality, whether it be blog, forum or other.

So how does a directory owner stop from getting de-indexed? Simple. Edit your damn content. I've been saying it for 10+ years and yes I am BLUE in the face :eek:

What does editing mean? It means that you don't just reject bad websites and bad submissions. You also review/edit/rewrite titles and descriptions for the sites that you do include to ensure you have unique content that is relevant to your directory --- this also includes correct categorisation.

Ignore my advice at your peril. All the directories that I considered to have a standard of quality are indexed... Do you really think that is a coincidence?

I'm looking for a coder long-term to work on the Info Vilesilencer back-end.

At the moment there are a lot of little (should be easy) things to fix, as well as much larger developments that I want to work on with the right person.

This would be an on-going job, and would be very lucrative for the right person.

They would also get to work on a rather large and well-regarded website, which is obviously something they can stick in their resume/portfolio for future references and jobs.

The position itself is not full-time but more of a project by project basis. This would allow a coder to work on other projects with other people. However, I would expect all work to be completed in a timely fashion and if bugs exist within the coders work for them to fix these ASAP and without cost.

I've taken some time to work through the original list of 134 directories announced in April on Digital point provided by Subi

What I've done is the following:

• Deleted all the .info URLs from the list. Those are junk.
• Deleted all that had redirected outbound links.
• Deleted article-only repositories and social-bookmarking-only sites
• Deleted all the directories on the default directory script templates. They are either all part of the one network, or can't be bothered having a unique design/name.
• Deleted any other obvious link networks no matter how small.
• Deleted any URLs that appeared offline or were hacked.

What is left now is just 17 directories from that original 134.

NB: The steps I've taken above are a very quick run through of the list to take out the obvious junk to produce a much smaller list. If you are planning on submitting my suggestion is to spend the time investigating this much smaller and more manageable list and then submit to those that you feel meet a standard of listing websites.
